Karel Appel

Biography

Karel Appel was born on April 25, 1921, in Amsterdam, Kingdom of the Netherlands. He became a renowned Dutch painter, sculptor, and graphic artist and was one of the founders of the avant-garde group CoBrA. Appel's work is characterized by a blend of figurative and abstract expressionist elements. His artistic practice spanned multiple directions and techniques: he worked as a monumental painter, printmaker, master of etching, lithographer, collagist, illustrator, poet, and draftsman. Beyond painting and graphic arts, Appel was involved in creating stained glass, theatrical design, scenography, furniture design, ceramics, and glass painting. Notable works include "The Discovery" and "Anti-Robot." Karel Appel passed away on May 3, 2006, in Zurich. His contributions to art have been recognized across various artistic circles, particularly in movements related to abstract expressionism and CoBrA.
