Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) was a British photographer known for her close-up portraits and staged scenes inspired by literary, biblical, and allegorical themes. She began photography at age 48 and developed a distinct style featuring soft focus and expressive composition.

Biography

Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) was born in Calcutta and began her independent photographic practice at the age of 48 after receiving a camera as a gift from her daughter and son-in-law. She set up a darkroom and a glass studio at her home on the Isle of Wight and quickly turned this new pursuit into a serious artistic endeavor. Cameron photographed relatives, friends, writers, scientists, and artists, producing close-up psychological portraits as well as staged compositions based on literary, biblical, and allegorical subjects. Her photographs are often characterized by soft focus, tight framing, and visible traces of the print-making process. Though contemporaries criticized these technical deviations, Cameron consistently advocated for photography as an art form. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds over nine hundred of her photographs and notes her close association with the then South Kensington Museum: her first museum exhibition took place there in 1865, and in 1868 she was provided with premises for a portrait studio. Most of her work was created as albumen silver prints from glass negatives.
