Juan Luna
Juan Luna (1857–1899) was a Filipino painter, sculptor, and autobiographer known for his academic style. He created historical and portrait paintings including the series Chula, Spoliarium, and The Parisian Life. He also participated in the Filipino revolutionary anti-colonial war.
Biography
Juan Luna-i-Novicio was born on October 23, 1857, in the city of Badoc, Philippines. He was a Filipino painter, sculptor, and autobiographer who also took part in the Filipino revolutionary anti-colonial war. Juan Luna was the brother of General Antonio Luna. In his artistic career, he represented the academicism movement and worked primarily in historical and portrait painting. Among his most notable works are the series Chula, the painting "Spoliarium," as well as the canvases "The Parisian Life," "Hymen, oh Hyménée!" and "Ecce Homo." Juan Luna passed away on December 7, 1899, in Hong Kong.
