Juan Gris was born on March 23, 1887, in Madrid, Spain. He was a painter, sculptor, draftsman, illustrator, architectural draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and visual arts figure. Gris became one of the founders of Cubism, predominantly working in analytical Cubism, abstractionism, figurativism, portraiture, and still life. Among his notable works are "Carafe and Book," "Portrait of Pablo Picasso," "Bouteille d’anis," and "The Blue Carpet." He died on May 11, 1927, in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.
