José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896) was a Filipino polymath of Tagalog-Chinese descent: educator, scientist, Spanish-language poet and writer, polyglot, artist, and sculptor. He was a leading figure in the Philippine nationalist movement and a reform advocate under Spanish colonial rule.
Biography
José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born on June 19, 1861, in the city of Calamba, Captaincy General of the Philippines. He was a Filipino educator and scientist, a Spanish-language poet and writer, a polyglot, artist, and sculptor of Tagalog-Chinese heritage. Rizal became the ideologist of the cultural revival of Southeast Asian peoples and Filipino nationalism. Alongside Marcelo del Pilar, he was one of the founders of the reformist movement in Spanish Philippines that laid the groundwork for the Philippine Revolution. Rizal is known for his significant literary works such as the novels "Noli Me Tángere" and "El filibusterismo," as well as the poem "Mi último adiós." Throughout his diverse career, he was recognized as a pioneer of the national movement and held multiple roles: physician, ophthalmologist, surgeon, writer, poet, translator, literary translator, linguist, artist, political activist, politician, revolutionary, and a universal man. José Rizal died on December 30, 1896, in Manila, leaving a considerable legacy in Philippine culture and history.
