José María Obregón
José María Obregón (1832–1902) was a Mexican Romantic artist and an early figure in Mexican muralism, known for being among the first to depict indigenous peoples in art. He studied at the San Carlos Academy, and his works are housed in Mexico’s National Museum of Art and National Palace.

José María Obregón was born in 1832 in Mexico City, Mexico. He was an artist of the Romantic era and counted among the pioneers of Mexican muralism. Obregón was one of the first artists to depict Mexico’s indigenous peoples in his work. He studied at the San Carlos Academy, which was one of Mexico’s leading art institutions. His oeuvre includes portraits and historical paintings. Obregón’s works are preserved in the collections of the National Museum of Art and the National Palace of Mexico. He passed away in 1902 in Ingles. His legacy remains significant in the history of Mexican art.
