José Vital Branco Malhoa, better known as José Malhoa, was born on April 28, 1857, in the town of Caldas da Rainha in the Kingdom of Portugal. He was a Portuguese painter who held a prominent position in the realism movement. During his creative career, Malhoa became one of the foremost representatives of Portuguese realist painting, alongside Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro. His artistic legacy belongs to the cultural tradition of Portugal in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. José Malhoa died on October 26, 1929, in Figueira dos Vinhos, Portugal.
