Johan Huizinga
Johan Huizinga (1872–1945) was a Dutch cultural historian and medievalist. He taught at the universities of Groningen and Leiden and was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences. Huizinga also served as vice-president of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation of the League of Nations.
Biography
Johan Huizinga was born on December 7, 1872, in Groningen, Kingdom of the Netherlands. He became a prominent Dutch historian and theorist of culture, specializing in medieval history. From 1905 to 1915, he was a professor at the University of Groningen. He then taught at Leiden University from 1915 until 1942. Huizinga was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1938, he assumed the position of vice-president of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation of the League of Nations. His scholarly legacy includes significant works such as "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" and "Homo Ludens." He was also nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Johan Huizinga passed away on February 1, 1945, in the city of De Steeg.
