Johan Christian Dahl

Biography

Johan Christian Clausen Dahl was born on February 24, 1788, in Bergen, Norway. He became a notable Norwegian painter and graphic artist specializing in landscapes. Dahl is considered a founder of Norwegian national landscape art and made significant contributions to the development of the landscape genre in Norway. During his lifetime, he also worked in Dresden, where he was affiliated with the German school of Dresden Romantics. In addition to his creative activities as a painter and landscape artist, he held a professorship. Among his well-known works are "Norwegian Mountain Landscape" and "View of Dresden by Moonlight." Johan Christian Clausen Dahl died on October 14, 1857, in Dresden. His son, Johan Sigvald Dahl (1827–1902), also became a painter.
