Jilali Gharbaoui was born on May 10, 1929, in the city of Jorf El Melha. He was a Moroccan painter and sculptor, regarded as one of the founders of modernist art in Morocco alongside Ahmed Cherkaoui. Gharbaoui's work is distinguished by abstraction based on brushstrokes and the materiality of paint, which set his style apart from the main directions of Moroccan culture. He died on April 8, 1971, in the 7th arrondissement of Paris.
