Jēkabs Kazaks
Jēkabs Kazaks (1895–1920) was a Russian and Latvian modernist artist and a founder of Latvian national modernism. Known primarily for portraiture, his work is associated with Expressionism. He spent his life in Riga, where he made a significant impact on early 20th-century Latvian art.
Biography
Jēkabs Kazaks was born on February 18, 1895, in Riga, which was then part of the Russian Empire. He was a Russian and Latvian modernist artist and one of the founders of Latvian national modernism. His artistic activity is connected with Expressionism. Kazaks primarily worked in the genre of portraiture. Among his notable works is the painting "Refugees". Kazaks died relatively young on November 30, 1920, in Riga. Despite his short life, he left a significant mark on the art of early 20th-century Latvia, reflecting the cultural influences of both the Russian Empire and Latvia.
