Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was an American artist from Park Slope, New York. He began as a graffiti artist and gained recognition in the 1980s as a neo-expressionist and primitivism representative. His work spanned figurative art, graffiti, painting, sculpture, collage, and illustration.
Biography
Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960, in the Park Slope neighborhood of New York. He emerged initially as a graffiti artist in New York City before becoming known in the 1980s as a neo-expressionist and a figure associated with primitivism. His creative activities encompassed various fields: he worked as a figurative artist and graffiti artist, and also engaged in painting, sculpture, collage, and illustration. Beyond his work as a painter, Basquiat was also a musician, music producer, composer, and art activist. Additionally, he was recognized as an installation artist, art figure, monumental painter, cartoonist, musicologist, photographer, actor, and architectural draftsman. Jean-Michel Basquiat died on August 12, 1988, in New York. His artistic activity belongs to the post-war era and is connected to American culture.
