James Ensor

Biography

James Ensor was born on April 13, 1860, in Ostend, Belgium. He was a Belgian painter, graphic artist, and engraver recognized for his works marked by pronounced expressiveness, bright coloration, grotesque imagery, and social-satirical content. Ensor worked in various genres, including still life, portrait, cityscape, genre scenes, and Christian art. His artistic directions mainly involved Expressionism and Symbolism. Throughout his life, he created notable works such as "Au conservatoire," "The Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889," "The Lady in Distress," and "The Intrigue." James Ensor passed away on November 19, 1949, in his hometown of Ostend. During his career, Ensor was also an author, printmaker, graphic artist, architectural draftsman, and figure in the visual arts, leaving a significant mark on Belgian culture and art.
