Jacques Hnizdovsky

Biography

Jacques Hnizdovsky was born on January 27, 1915, in the village of Pylypche, then part of Austria-Hungary. He became a prominent American artist of Ukrainian descent whose creative work encompassed various genres of painting and graphic arts. In addition to painting, Hnizdovsky worked as an etcher, sculptor, graphic artist, ceramist, and illustrator. One of his roles was as a designer of postage stamps. Besides his practical artistic activities, he was also an art historian and critic. In his work, he adhered to the style of realism. Throughout his life, Jacques Hnizdovsky maintained cultural and national ties with Austria-Hungary, Poland, and the United States. His life ended in New York City on November 8, 1985.
