Ivan Martos
Ivan Petrovich Martos (1754–1835) was a Russian sculptor and educator from Ichnia. He worked in Saint Petersburg from the time of Catherine the Great, served as an academician and rector of the sculpture department at the Imperial Academy of Arts, and was known as a proponent of classicism.
Biography
Ivan Petrovich Martos was born in 1754 in Ichnia. He was a Russian sculptor, art figure, and educator affiliated with both arts and university teaching. Originating from the Little Russian nobility, Martos lived and worked in Saint Petersburg beginning in the reign of Catherine the Great. He was a supporter of classicism and held the titles of academician and professor. During his career, he served as rector of the sculpture department at the Imperial Academy of Arts. In 1818, he was awarded the rank of Actual State Councillor. Among his notable works are the monument to Alexander I and the monument to Lomonosov in Arkhangelsk. Ivan Martos passed away on April 5, 1835, in Saint Petersburg. His national identity is associated with the Russian Empire and Finland.
