Iva Despić-Simonović
Iva Despić-Simonović (1891–1961) was a Yugoslav sculptor born in Croatia. Educated in Zagreb, Paris, and Munich, she lived in Sarajevo from 1920 and served as a court sculptor in Belgrade. She was the first modern sculptor in Bosnia.
Biography
Iva Despić-Simonović, née Simonović, was born on August 15, 1891, in Hrastovica, Petrinja, Croatia. She received her artistic education in Zagreb, Paris, and Munich, which shaped her professional development as a sculptor. Iva was a Yugoslav sculptor who primarily lived in Sarajevo from 1920 onwards. Alongside her main practice, she worked as a court sculptor in Belgrade. Between the world wars, she was the first and only sculptor in modern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Iva Despić-Simonović died on July 12, 1961. Her work left a noticeable mark on the development of Yugoslav sculpture, although after World War II her name faded into obscurity.
