Isaak Brodsky

Biography

Isaak Izrailevich Brodsky was born on December 25, 1883, in the city of Berdyansk. He was a Russian painter and graphic artist of Jewish origin who worked primarily in Saint Petersburg–Leningrad during the Silver Age and the early decades of the Soviet era. Brodsky's biography is closely connected to historical painting and the portrait genre; he also created narrative thematic works and landscapes. In addition to his artistic practice, he was an outstanding educator and collector, as well as a memoir writer. He was one of the pioneers and active contributors to the visual leniniana, and also worked as a caricaturist. His activities as an artist included participation in the formation and development of socialist realism. His life and work were tied to the Russian Empire, the RSFSR, and the USSR, reflecting his national and cultural affiliations. Isaak Brodsky died in 1939.
