Ilya Ostroukhov

Biography

Ilya Semenovich Ostroukhov was born on July 20, 1858, in Moscow. He was a Russian landscape painter active during the era of the 'counter-reforms' and the Silver Age. Ostroukhov lived and worked in Moscow throughout his life. Beyond his painting career, he was known as a collector of Russian and Western art and a skilled expert in painting attribution. His activities also extended into the museum field. Ilya Semenovich was related to the Botkin family and maintained a close friendship and alliance with Pavel Tretyakov, one of the foremost patrons of Russian art. He died on July 8, 1929, in Moscow. Throughout his life, Ostroukhov was culturally and nationally connected with the Russian Empire and the USSR.
