Ilya Glazunov

Ilya Glazunov (1930–2017) was a Soviet and Russian painter, scenographer, and educator. A People's Artist of the USSR and founder of the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, he specialized in historical painting and portraiture.

Biography

Ilya Sergeyevich Glazunov was born on June 10, 1930, in Saint Petersburg. He was a Soviet and Russian painter associated with the native soil artistic tradition, as well as a scenographer and educator. Throughout his artistic career, Glazunov specialized in historical painting and portrait genres. In recognition of his contributions to art, he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1980. He was also a full cavalier of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland." Beyond his creative work, Glazunov made a significant impact on art education by founding and serving as the rector of the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Educated and practiced as a philosopher, he left a notable mark on the cultural landscape of the USSR and Russia. Ilya Sergeyevich Glazunov passed away on July 9, 2017, in Moscow.
