Ike Gyokuran, also known as Tokuyama Gyokuran, was born in 1727 in Kyoto, Japan. She became renowned as a painter in the bunjinga style, which translates as "painting of the literati." In addition to her painting, she was a skilled calligrapher, poet, and an active participant in the arts. Throughout her life, Ike Gyokuran emerged as one of the first distinguished female artists in Japan, gaining recognition in her native city of Kyoto. Her influence continues to be acknowledged in the history of Japanese art. Ike Gyokuran passed away in 1784.
