Ibrahim El-Salahi
Ibrahim El-Salahi, born September 5, 1930, in Omdurman, Sudan, is a Sudanese artist, civil servant, and diplomat. He is a leading figure of the Khartoum School and the Hurufiyya movement, which merges traditional Islamic calligraphy with modern art. His work integrates African modernism and Catalan modernisme.
Biography
Ibrahim El-Salahi was born on September 5, 1930, in Omdurman, Sudan. He is a Sudanese artist, draftsman, civil servant, and diplomat. El-Salahi is regarded as one of the leading visual artists of the Khartoum School, as well as a significant figure in African modernism and the pan-Arab Hurufiyya movement. The Hurufiyya movement merges traditional forms of Islamic calligraphy with contemporary artistic practices. Additionally, El-Salahi's work exhibits elements of Catalan modernisme, figurativism, and allegory. His artworks reflect the integration of Islamic, African, Arab, and Western artistic traditions, creating a new visual language for Sudan. Alongside his artistic career, Ibrahim El-Salahi also worked in public service and diplomacy.
