Hussein Bicar

Biography

Hussein Amin Bicar was born on January 2, 1913, in Alexandria, Egypt. He was a painter, designer, illustrator, musician, and poet. In 1934, he graduated from the Cairo School of Fine Arts. He devoted more than 60 years of his life to teaching fine arts at various schools and universities, as well as through mass media. Hussein Bicar is regarded as one of the most prominent Egyptian artists of the twentieth century. He initiated the style of magazine painting, elevating newspaper illustrations almost to the level of fine art. His artistic style is characterized by simplicity and clarity, with influences from Pharaonic art evident in its harmony, tranquility, and mysticism. Besides illustration, he engaged in art criticism and created narrative poetry. Hussein Bicar was the first Egyptian artist to illustrate children's books in Arabic, playing a significant role in the establishment and development of this genre. Hussein Bicar died in 2002.
