Hugo Maurice Julien Claus was an eminent Belgian (Flemish) Dutch-language writer, poet, artist, playwright, and director of theater and film. He was born on April 5, 1929, in the city of Bruges, Belgium, and died on March 19, 2008, in Antwerp. Throughout his life, Claus demonstrated himself as a multifaceted creator who undertook many professions including author, poet, playwright, director, film director, cinematographer, screenwriter, artist, illustrator, draftsman, lithographer, translator, journalist, and librettist.
