Henry van de Velde
Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) was a Belgian architect, painter, graphic artist, and arts figure, recognized as one of the founders of the Art Nouveau and modernist styles. He worked in Belgium and Germany and created significant projects such as the Book Tower and the Kröller-Müller Museum.
Biography
Henry or Henri Clemens van de Velde was born on April 3, 1863, in Antwerp. He was a Belgian architect, painter, graphic artist, decorative arts designer, art theorist, and art critic. Van de Velde is regarded as one of the originators of the Art Nouveau and modernist styles. Throughout his life, he was connected with Belgium and Germany, reflecting his cultural affiliations and nationality. Among his notable works are the Book Tower, the Kröller-Müller Museum, Blumenwerf, the National Institute for Technical Education Leuven, and Villa Esche. Beyond architecture and painting, he engaged in interior and furniture design, ex-libris art, jewelry design, watercolor painting, and was a university educator. Van de Velde passed away on October 25, 1957, in Zurich, Switzerland.
