Biography

Johann Heinrich Füssli, also known as Henry Fuseli, was born on February 7, 1741, in Zurich. Füssli was a Swiss and English draftsman, painter, art historian, and theorist. He is regarded as one of the main innovators of painting at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Füssli’s work, alongside that of William Blake, is considered an early manifestation of Romanticism in English art. The artist worked in genres such as historical and religious painting as well as portraiture. Moreover, he was a graphic artist, illustrator, and architectural draftsman. Füssli was associated with several artistic movements including Romanticism, Neoclassicism, and Victorian fairy painting. He lived and worked in Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Notable works include "The Nightmare," "Titania and Bottom," and "Percival Delivering Belisane from the Enchantment of Urma." Füssli died on April 16, 1825, in Putney.
