Hélio Oiticica

Biography

Hélio Oiticica was born on July 26, 1937, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was a prominent artist, sculptor, draftsman, performer, and filmmaker. Oiticica worked within the genres of abstraction and installation art and was involved in several important artistic movements, including abstraction, neoconcretism, Tropicalia, Antropophagia, and the Concrete Art Movement. Throughout his career, he created numerous significant works such as Metaesquema 362, Metaesquema 12, Neoconcrete Relief, Be an Outlaw, Be a Hero, Sem título (Untitled), Vermelho cortando o branco, and Relevo espacial. Hélio Oiticica died on March 22, 1980, in Rio de Janeiro, where he lived all his life, leaving a notable mark on Brazilian and global art.
