Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) was a Finnish artist of Swedish origin known for self-portraits, portraits, historical paintings, and still lifes. She was associated with realism and modernism and was a key figure of Finland’s Golden Age of art.
Biography
Helene Schjerfbeck was born on July 10, 1862, in Helsinki, which was then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland. She was a Finnish artist of Swedish descent. Throughout her career, Schjerfbeck worked in various genres including self-portraiture, portraiture, historical painting, and still life. She is recognized as a representative of both modernism and realism and was one of the key figures of the Finnish Golden Age of art during the period from 1880 to 1910. Her artistic legacy reflects the aesthetic and artistic trends of her time. Additionally, she practiced ex libris design. Helene Schjerfbeck died on January 23, 1946, in Saltsjöbaden. Her national and cultural identity is linked to Finland and the Grand Duchy of Finland.
