He Xiangning
He Xiangning (1878–1972) was a Chinese revolutionary, feminist, politician, artist, and poet. She took part in Sun Yat-sen's Tongmenghui organization and served as Minister of Women's Affairs in Guangzhou, advocating for gender equality and organizing the first International Women's Day rally in China.
Biography
He Xiangning was born on June 27, 1878, in British Hong Kong. She was a renowned Chinese revolutionary, feminist, politician, artist, poet, and human rights advocate. Together with her husband Liao Zhongkai, she participated in Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary organization, the Tongmenghui. During Sun Yat-sen's governance in Guangzhou, He served as Minister of Women's Affairs, actively promoting gender equality. In 1924, she organized the first International Women's Day rally in China, marking an important event in the history of the women's movement. After her husband's assassination in 1925 and the mass extermination of Chinese communists in 1927, He withdrew from party politics for twenty years but continued to be involved in organizing resistance against the Japanese invasion of China. She passed away on September 1, 1972, in Beijing.
