Hassan Sharif

Biography

Hassan Sharif was born in 1951 in the city of Bender-Lenge and was an artist from the United Arab Emirates. Throughout his life, he lived and worked in Dubai. Sharif specialized in visual arts and was active as a performance artist. He founded the Al Marijah Art Atelier, an artistic workshop. Within regional art circles, he was widely regarded as a central figure in contemporary and conceptual art and was often referred to as the father of conceptual art in the Persian Gulf. Sharif's works are included in the collections of major museums such as the Guggenheim in New York and Abu Dhabi, the Centre Pompidou, the Mathaf Museum of Modern Arab Art, Tate Modern, and the Sharjah Art Foundation. Hassan Sharif passed away on September 18, 2016, in Abu Dhabi.
