Harry Bolus

Harry Bolus (1834–1911) was a South African botanist and founder of The Bolus Herbarium. Born in Nottingham, England, he was also a botanical illustrator, collector, explorer, and artist. He died in Oxford.

Biography

Harry Bolus was born on April 28, 1834, in Nottingham, England. He was a South African botanist whose work was closely connected with South Africa. Bolus founded The Bolus Herbarium, an important scientific institution dedicated to the study of the region's flora. In addition to his botanical pursuits, he possessed multiple professions and skills: he was a botanical illustrator, a botanical and scientific collector, and an explorer. Beyond his scientific activities, Harry Bolus also worked as a stockbroker and engaged in artistic work as a painter. He passed away on May 25, 1911, in Oxford. His diverse activities and professional interests made a significant contribution to botanical science and culture in South Africa.
