Gunta Stölzl
Gunta Stölzl (1897–1983) was a German textile artist and designer who played a key role in the development of the Bauhaus weaving workshop. She was the first female instructor awarded the title of "Master" at the Bauhaus school.
Biography
Gunta Stölzl was born on March 5, 1897, in Munich. She was a German textile artist, designer, and arts professional, also known as a craftswoman, writer, draftsman, and watercolor painter. Stölzl played a fundamental role in the development of the Bauhaus weaving workshop, where she initiated significant changes shifting the focus from individual artistic tapestries towards modern industrial designs. She was among the few female instructors on the Bauhaus staff and was the first woman to be awarded the title of "Master." Gunta Stölzl had cultural ties to Germany, Switzerland, and Israel. She passed away on April 22, 1983, in Männedorf.
