Grigory Gagarin
Grigory Grigoryevich Gagarin (1810–1893) was a Russian painter and draftsman of the Romantic academicism of the Nikolaev era. He served as vice president and honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Arts and was also a government official.
Biography
Prince Grigory Grigoryevich Gagarin was born on April 29, 1810, in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire. He was a renowned Russian draftsman and painter associated with the Romantic academicism of the Nicholas era. Gagarin was a friend and devoted student of Karl Bryullov. He skillfully worked in genre and battle graphics, portraiture, and served as an illustrator and church decorator. Additionally, he created architectural designs in the Neo-Byzantine style. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Gagarin was also an art historian and a state official. From 1880, he held the position of Ober-Hofmeister of the court of His Imperial Majesty and was a privy councillor. He acted as vice president and honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Arts and was a trusted associate of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna. Grigory Gagarin died on January 18, 1893, in Châtellerault.
