Biography

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in 1527 in Milan, in the Duchy of Milan, where he also died on July 11, 1593. He was an Italian painter and decorative artist associated with the Mannerism movement. Arcimboldo created works in various genres including allegory, still life, portrait painting, religious art, animal painting, and figures. He held multiple professional roles throughout his career: painter, court painter, draftsman, designer, tapestry maker, architectural draughtsman, engineer, and fresco artist. Among his most notable works are the series "The Seasons," "The Jurist," as well as "Portrait of Emperor Rudolf II as Vertumnus" and "Portraits of the Archduchesses." His work was later recognized as a precursor to Surrealism. All significant events and achievements in his life are connected to Milan and the cultural environment of the Duchy of Milan.
