Giorgio de Chirico (1888–1978) was an Italian painter and a leading figure of metaphysical art, a precursor to surrealism. Born in Volos and died in Rome, he worked in genres including nude, portrait, landscape, allegory, and abstraction.
Biography
Giorgio de Chirico was born on July 10, 1888, in the city of Volos. He was an Italian artist and a major representative of metaphysical painting, significantly influencing the development of surrealism. Throughout his creative career, de Chirico worked in various genres including nudes, portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, allegories, abstraction, animalistic, and mythological painting. In addition to painting, he was a sculptor, engraver, illustrator, jewelry designer, draftsman, and stage designer. Among his most notable works are "Melancholy and Mystery of a Street," "The Poet's Uncertainty," and "Song of Love." Giorgio de Chirico was the older brother of writer Alberto Savinio. He passed away on November 20, 1978, in Rome. His national and cultural identity was Italian.
