Gian Lorenzo Bernini

Biography

Gian Lorenzo Bernini was born on December 7, 1598, in Naples. He was an Italian architect, sculptor, artist, designer, and cultural figure, considered one of the leading representatives of the Baroque period. Bernini emerged as an outstanding architect and sculptor of his time and is regarded as the creator of the Baroque style in sculpture. His architectural work included designing churches, chapels, and secular buildings, often integrating large-scale projects that combined architecture and sculpture, such as public fountains and funerary monuments. Bernini was also involved in theatrical arts, writing, directing, and acting in plays, as well as designing stage sets and theatrical machinery. In decorative arts, he created lamps, tables, mirrors, and carriages. Among his famous works are "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa," "The Fountain of the Four Rivers," St. Peter's Square, Palazzo Barberini, Sant'Andrea al Quirinale, busts of Pope Gregory XV and Costanza Bonarelli, along with works in the genres of landscape, Christian art, nudes, portraiture, and caricature. He died on November 28, 1680, in Rome, leaving a significant legacy in Italian culture and world sculpture.
