Gerard Sekoto

Gerard Sekoto (1913–1993) was a South African artist and musician, known as a pioneer of urban black art. Born in Botshabelo, he lived in exile in France from 1947 until his death in Noisiel-sur-Marne. His work significantly contributed to South Africa's visual arts history.

Gerard Sekoto was born on December 9, 1913, in Botshabelo, within the territory of the Union of South Africa. He gained recognition as both an artist and musician, making a significant contribution to the development of South African visual arts. Sekoto is considered one of the founders of urban black art, marking his important place within the artistic culture of the country. In 1947, Gerard Sekoto left his homeland and settled in France, where he continued his creative work. He passed away on March 20, 1993, in Noisiel-sur-Marne.
