Fyodor Rokotov

Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov (1735–December 24, 1808) was a Russian painter and portraitist, an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Born in the Vorontsovo estate, he is regarded as a leading Moscow portraitist of Catherine the Great's classicism and the author of her coronation portrait.

Biography

Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov was born in 1735 at the Vorontsovo estate. He was a Russian painter and portraitist who was active during the reign of Catherine II. Rokotov is recognized as a major Moscow portraitist of Catherine the Great's classicism and is the author of the well-known coronation portrait of Catherine II. He also compiled a portrait gallery of the Moscow nobility of his time. For his contributions to the visual arts, he was awarded the title of academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. His artistic genre was portraiture. Rokotov passed away on December 24, 1808, in Moscow.
