Frances Hodgkins
Frances Mary Hodgkins (1869–1947) was a New Zealand and British artist and designer associated with Modernism. She worked in still life and landscape genres and was active in the British avant-garde group Seven and Five in the 1930s.
Biography
Frances Mary Hodgkins was born on April 28, 1869, in Dunedin, New Zealand. She was an artist, designer, and arts figure connected with Modernist art, working mainly in the genres of still life and landscape. In 1901, Hodgkins left New Zealand and spent time living in Paris, where she taught at the Académie Colarossi and later founded her own school. After World War I, her work became primarily linked with Great Britain. During the 1930s, Frances Hodgkins was a member of the English avant-garde group Seven and Five. She received recognition during her lifetime in Europe and is considered one of New Zealand's most prominent artists. Hodgkins passed away on May 13, 1947, in Dorchester, United Kingdom.
