Biography

Fernando Botero Angulo was born on April 19, 1932, in the city of Medellín. He was a Colombian artist, sculptor, and figure in the plastic arts working primarily in figurativism. His unique style, sometimes referred to as "Boterismo," is characterized by depictions of people and figures with unusually large and exaggerated volumes. These images may carry political satire or humorous intent depending on the specific work. Botero earned a reputation as one of the most recognized and cited contemporary artists of Latin America. In addition to painting and sculpting, he worked as an illustrator, draftsman, and architectural draftsman. His creative legacy is connected to modern art, and he maintained cultural ties to Colombia, France, and Italy. Notable works by Botero include "The Bullfight," "The Death of Luis Chalmeta," and "The Raval Cat." His artworks are displayed in public spaces worldwide, including prominent locations such as Park Avenue in New York and the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Fernando Botero died on September 15, 2023, in Monaco.
