Federico Cantú Garza
Federico Cantú Garza (1907–1989) was a Mexican painter, engraver, and sculptor. Born in Nuevo León and deceased in Mexico City, he participated in Mexican muralism but favored a more academic style. He is known for the sculpture "Motherhood."
Biography
Federico Eraclio Cantú Garza was born on March 3, 1907, in Nuevo León, Mexico. He was a renowned Mexican painter, engraver, sculptor, and monumental artist. Cantú Garza was considered a member of the Mexican muralism movement, although his style significantly differed from the typical approach of this movement, as he predominantly adhered to older and more academic forms of painting and sculpture. His work achieved the greatest success in exhibitions held in the United States and Europe, despite his murals and sculptures being primarily created in Mexico. One of Cantú's most famous works is the sculpture "Motherhood," an image which was adapted for the logo of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Federico Cantú Garza died on January 29, 1989, in Mexico City.
