Fan Kuan
Fan Kuan (956–1026) was a Chinese landscape painter of the Northern Song era, recognized as a key founder of the monochrome landscape genre. Born in Yaozhou, he followed the tradition of Jing Hao and studied under Li Cheng, contributing significantly to Northern Song landscape art.
Biography
Fan Kuan was born in 956 in Yaozhou and became one of the prominent Chinese landscape painters of the Northern Song period. He is regarded as a successor to the traditions of Jing Hao and as one of the founders of the monochrome landscape genre. Fan Kuan belonged to the Northern Landscape style and was known as one of the three founding masters of the landscape school alongside Guan Tong and Li Cheng. Among Li Cheng's students, Fan Kuan is the most well-known. His artistic work is linked to the cultural environment of the Northern Song and the Song Empire. Fan Kuan died in 1026. His contributions significantly influenced the development of Chinese landscape painting and shaped future generations of artists.
