Eugene Lanceray

Biography

Eugene Evgenievich Lanceray was born on September 4, 1875, in Pavlovsk. He was a Russian painter and graphic artist, recognized as a follower of retrospective style and an important figure in the painting scene of Silver Age St. Petersburg. Later in his career, Lanceray became a master of Moscow socialist realism and a pedagogue. Throughout his artistic activity, he also worked in the genres of magazine and book illustration, scenography, landscape painting, and monumental decoration. Lanceray came from an artistic family: he was the eldest son of sculptor Evgeny Lanceray, and his siblings were architect Nikolai Lanceray and painter Zinaida Serebriakova. The family was closely connected with the Benois family, well-known in the artistic circles of that time. Eugene Lanceray died on September 13, 1946, in Moscow, leaving a significant mark on the history of Russian visual art as a figure of both the Russian Empire and Soviet eras.
