Etso Ugbodaga-Ngu
Etso Clara Ugbodaga-Ngu (1921–1996) was a Nigerian artist and educator known for her vibrant geometric paintings imbued with strong emotion. Her work influenced Nigerian culture and politics, and she was the first Nigerian female professor at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology.
Biography
Etso Clara Ugbodaga-Ngu, known as Ugbodaga-Ngu, was born in 1921 in Kano, Nigeria. She became an artist and educator whose work was distinguished by the use of bright colors and the depiction of strength and determination. Her geometric style developed from early works such as "Market Women" (1961) and left a significant mark on Nigerian culture and politics. Etso Ugbodaga-Ngu was the first Nigerian and first female professor at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science, and Technology. In addition, she was the first Nigerian female artist to hold a solo exhibition in London, England. She passed away in 1996.
