Mancoba is regarded as an avant-garde artist who spent much of his life in Europe. He was likely the first professional Black modern artist from South Africa, actively exhibiting his works from the late 1920s onwards. His work is connected with the COBRA movement. Ernest Mancoba passed away on October 25, 2002, in Clamart. His contribution is recognized in cultural and artistic circles within South Africa and beyond.
