Enrique Echeverría

Biography

Enrique Echeverría Vásquez was born on July 14, 1923, in Mexico City, Mexico. He was a Mexican painter known as a member of the Generación de la Ruptura and one of the early members of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana. In the mid-20th century, he was among the artists who departed from the established figurative painting tradition of Mexico and began experimenting with abstract art and other modern painting directions that originated from Europe. His creative career attracted the attention of other artists and critics alike. Echeverría passed away in 1972 in Cuernavaca at a time when artists of his generation were just beginning to receive broad recognition for their work. After his death, two major exhibitions of his works were held at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City—one immediately following his death and a retrospective thirty years later in 2003.
