Biography

Emmanuil Alexandrovich Dmitriev-Mamonov was born on January 19, 1824, in Moscow, Russian Empire. He was the son of the battle painter Alexander Ivanovich Dmitriev-Mamonov. Emmanuil specialized in portraiture, creating painted and graphic portraits of well-known figures such as Nikolai Mikhailovich Yazykov, Nikolai Fyodorovich Pavlov, Konstantin Sergeyevich Aksakov, Alexey Stepanovich Khomyakov, Pavel Vasilievich Nashchokin, Pyotr Vasilievich Kireevsky, and others. A particular emphasis in his work was the portraits of Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, which contemporaries noted for their strong resemblance to the original. These portraits are considered among the most successful likenesses of the writer, alongside works by Alexey Alekseevich Ivanov, Alexey Gavrilovich Venetsianov, and Fyodor Alexandrovich Moller. In addition to being an artist, Dmitriev-Mamonov is also mentioned in some sources as a publicist and art historian. He lived and worked during the period of the Russian Empire and died on January 11, 1884, in Saint Petersburg.
