Ellen Thesleff
Ellen Thesleff (1869–1954) was a Finnish painter and graphic artist, among the first expressionist painters in Finland. Born and died in Helsinki, she worked in landscape and symbolism and was associated with symbolism and expressionism.
Biography
Ellen Thesleff was born on October 5, 1869, in Helsinki, in the Grand Duchy of Finland, which was then part of the Russian Empire. She was an active figure in the arts, known both as a painter and a graphic artist. Thesleff became one of the first Finnish female painters working in the expressionist style. Her work includes genres such as landscape and symbolism. She is also connected with several artistic movements including symbolism, expressionism, naturalism, and modernism. Thesleff lived her entire life in Helsinki, where she passed away on January 12, 1954. Her contribution to Finnish and European art remains significant, reflecting the diversity of artistic directions in the early 20th century.
