Elioth Lauritz Leganyer Gruner was born on December 16, 1882, in Gisborne. He was an Australian artist culturally affiliated with both Australia and New Zealand. Gruner is recognized as a continuing figure of the Heidelberg School plein air tradition in Australian art. His work is distinguished by high-key impressionistic landscapes and a skillful depiction of transient effects of light. According to Norman Lindsay, Gruner "created the purest light ever seen on canvas." Elioth Gruner died on October 17, 1939, in Sydney. His artistic career corresponds to the period from 1850 to 1913.
