El Anatsui
El Anatsui (born June 13, 1944, in Anyako, Ghana) is a contemporary African artist, sculptor, and installation artist associated with Nigeria and Ghana. He is known for his curtain-like works made from aluminum bottle caps and metal objects, working in abstraction and installation art. He is also a university teacher and textile artist.
Biography
El Anatsui was born on June 13, 1944, in the town of Anyako, Ghana. He is a contemporary African artist and sculptor, also active as a textile artist, ceramist, installation artist, and university educator. Anatsui's work spans the genres of abstraction and installation art. He has gained recognition for his use of unconventional materials, including flattened aluminum bottle caps, cans, and metal objects, which he assembles into unique, large-scale sheets resembling curtains. His national and cultural identity is linked to both Nigeria and Ghana. Throughout his practice, Anatsui explores contemporary art by combining traditions of African culture with innovative artistic techniques.
