Edward Steichen
Edward Steichen (1879–1973) was an American and Luxembourgish photographer and critic, a leading figure of 20th-century photography. He was a pictorialist, founder of fashion photography, war photographer, and artist.
Biography
Edward Steichen was born on March 27, 1879, in the town of Bivange. He is one of the key figures in 20th-century world photography, with a dual cultural heritage of the United States and Luxembourg. Steichen was known as a photographer, war photographer, artist, curator, art historian, and art figure. Throughout his career, he specialized in pictorialism and became one of the founders of the fashion photography genre. Together with Alfred Stieglitz, he led the American 'Photo-Secession'. Notable works include "The Pond—Moonlight" and "The Family of Man". Edward Steichen died on March 25, 1973, in Redding.
